Description
Reclaiming Food Security by Michael S. Carolan A secure food system should provide more than just cheap calories. It should enable people and nations to prosper, leading long, happy, and healthy lives. Yet, for the past fifty years, food security has been measured primarily by its ability to provide cheap calories. This approach has come at a great cost, harming the environment, individual and societal well-being, human health, and the food sovereignty of nations. The author reviews the concept of food security and proposes a new definition, assessing whether current policies have improved our lives and the environment. One way to measure food system quality is through the Food and Human Security Index (FHSI), which calculates scores for 126 countries based on indicators of well-being, nutrition, ecological sustainability, food dependency, and market concentration. The results are counter-intuitive, with countries like Costa Rica ranking high and the United States lower than expected. The author argues that it's time to reclaim food security by returning to its original spirit, prioritizing the well-being of people and the planet alongside economic efficiency.
