Description

The Psychology of Thought Control, Menticide, and Brainwashing Since 1933, Dr. Joost A. M. Meerloo has studied the methods by which systematic mental pressure brings people to abject submission. He witnessed these methods firsthand during World War II, when he was under Nazi occupation in Holland. As a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, he was able to treat some of the victims and later, as Chief of the Psychological Department of the Netherlands Forces, he investigated coercive methods used by the Nazis. Meerloo's experiences with enforced interrogation and his subsequent escape from a Nazi prison also informed his work. After the war, he came to the United States, where he continued to study the social aspects of thought control, brainwashing, and mental coercion. He coined the term "menticide," the killing of the spirit, to describe this peculiar crime. This book is a comprehensive exploration of the psychological techniques used by totalitarian regimes to control and manipulate individuals. Meerloo's work provides a unique insight into the methods used to break the human spirit and impose a subjective "truth" on victims' minds.
