Description
The south of Scotland has a rich geological history, shaped by millions of years of tectonic activity. The region was once home to a vast ocean, which was compressed by the collision of ancient lands, resulting in the formation of the Old Red Sandstone. This distinctive rock, with its characteristic brick-red colour, was deposited by rivers and streams that crisscrossed the area. The Eildon Hills, a prominent landscape feature, was formed around 432 million years ago through violent explosive volcanic activity. The area's unique geology has played a significant role in the development of the region's cities, including Dumfries and Glasgow, which were built using the building stones created from the sand dunes that once blanketed the area.
