Central Scotland's landscapes have been shaped by 5,000 years of history and 400 million years of geological change. The oldest rocks, found near Lesmahagow and in the Pentland Hills, date back to the Pictish era. These 'inliers' of ancient rock are surrounded by younger strata, which have yielded some of the oldest fish on earth. The geology of the area is complex, with rocks of the Old Red Sandstone and Carboniferous era underlying much of Central Scotland. Volcanic rocks, lava, desert sandstones, limestones, and coal measures make up the bedrock patchwork. A thick layer of ice, up to two kilometres deep, once blanketed the landscape, smoothing out the bedrock into the familiar scenes we see today. The coal and iron ore beneath the ground played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution in Scotland, and the focus on understanding the rocks beneath our feet was initially concentrated on the most valuable mineral resources.
