Spain had been fighting in North Africa since 1909, seeking new colonial possessions and compensation for losses elsewhere. The war was marked by both disasters and victories, including the cavalry charge at Taxdirt in 1913. The Spanish army faced numerous challenges, from the enemy forces of Mizzian and El Roghi to the revolt led by Abd-el Krim, which resulted in significant losses at Annual in 1921. However, this period also saw significant reforms and innovations, including the founding of the Spanish Legion and the recruitment of Moroccan soldiers into the Regulares.
