Rhodesian Fire Force 1966-80 In November 1965, Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith declared independence from Britain, sparking a guerrilla war that would test the country's military capabilities. To counter the insurgency, the Rhodesian Air Force and Light Infantry developed a new tactic, known as Fire Force, which relied on innovative use of firepower and mobility. The Fire Force concept was born in 1974, when the RhAF acquired a 20mm cannon from the Portuguese. This cannon was mounted in an Alouette III K-Car, supported by ground troops deployed from G-Cars and parachuted from DC-3 Dakotas. The tactic proved highly effective, with a kill ratio exceeding 80:1 against enemy guerrillas. The Fire Force's ruthless efficiency was acknowledged by ZANLA generals, who admitted that their army could not have survived another year in the field without it. This book tells the story of the Fire Force's development and its impact on the Rhodesian war of liberation.
