Description
Emerging Evangelicals: Faith, Modernity and the Desire for Authenticity by James S. Bielo explores the impact of the Emerging Church movement on American Evangelicals. Drawing on three years of ethnographic fieldwork, Bielo examines how this response to conservative Evangelical culture challenges traditional congregational models and creates new networks of related house churches. The author's analysis combines discussions of the movement's history, discursive contours, defining practices, cultural logics, and contentious interactions with conservative Evangelical critics. This study rethinks the boundaries of "Evangelical" as a category, illuminating how Emerging Evangelicals interact with the cultural conditions of modernity, late modernity, and visions of postmodern Christianity. By examining this movement, Bielo sheds new light on the important changes at work among American Protestants, offering a nuanced understanding of their interactions with contemporary culture.
