Nineteenth-century British evangelicals are often misunderstood as being anti-intellectual and philistine. This book challenges that perception by examining their leisure activities, artistic pursuits, and cultural interests between 1790 and 1833.
Through a close analysis of periodicals, memoirs, and letters, the author reveals that these evangelicals shared many common interests with their contemporaries, including a love of art, music, literature, and study. In fact, their theology encouraged such pursuits as being more in line with spirituality than 'sensual' or 'worldly' activities.
However, this faith also led to a tension between culture and learning, with some evangelicals dismissing non-religious pursuits as 'vanity'. The book explores how this rigid attitude developed over time, ultimately making it difficult for even the most cultured evangelicals to reconcile their love of the arts with their world-denying theology.
