Description
A novel set in a cosmopolitan city with a rich past, El callejón de los milagros is widely regarded as Naguib Mahfuz's masterpiece. The story follows Hamida, a young woman who dreams of marrying a wealthy merchant to escape her difficult life. Her affections are torn between Abbas, a humble barber willing to do anything for her, and Kirsha, the owner of a local café, whose desire for men leads him to ignore the scandal he causes. In the heart of El Cairo's centre, where a modern radio has replaced an old poet reciting the Koran, people gather in the street. Here, amidst the city's contrasts of poverty and love, Hamida navigates her relationships with those around her. A widow, Afifi, also seeks companionship, while Hamida's own desires are shaped by the men in her life. Set against the vibrant backdrop of El Cairo, this novel explores the complexities of human relationships and the tensions between desire and duty.
