Centuries of Trial Volume 1 Part 1 - The Failed Conquest, from 1171 to 1551, recounts the brutal campaign of conquest that followed the arrival of Norman adventurers in 1169. Despite initial promises of peace, Henry II's actions led to widespread displacement and marginalization of the Irish people. The mid-sixteenth century saw a shift in policy with the introduction of "Surrender and Regrant", which allowed Gaelic Kings to retain their lands if they accepted English rule. However, this policy ultimately contributed to the downfall of Ireland's native rulers. The subsequent period, Part 2 - For Faith and Fatherland, from 1552 to 1691, describes how Queen Elizabeth I used Catholicism as a pretext to eradicate the Gaelic way of life and supplant Irish kings with English settlers. A great rebellion in Ulster in 1594 was eventually crushed in 1603, leading to widespread land seizures and persecution. The native Irish were ordered to depart, and further land seizures followed. This pivotal period in Ireland's history is presented in a clear and concise manner, providing insight into the complex and often brutal relationship between England and Ireland during this time.
