The story begins with the departure of the Irish army and the assembly of a Protestant Parliament in Dublin, which renounces the Treaty of Limerick and leads to sustained Catholic persecution. The introduction of an oppressive Landlord system further reduced native Irish tenants to poverty, while the Irish Colonist Parliament secured limited independence during the American War of Independence. However, rebellion was brutally crushed, and the English Prime Minister William Pitt bribed colonists into accepting an Act of Union with England. Despite this, Catholic emancipation was secured in 1829, only for the British government to undermine it. The latter half of the nineteenth century saw a prolonged land war, ultimately leading to the sale of Irish land to its people. Home Rule once again became a pressing issue, setting the stage for the events that would shape Ireland's future.
