However, women consistently appeared in the histories of crusade and settlement, performing a range of tasks. This book examines the perceptions of women in historical narratives, including eyewitness accounts, lay histories, and monastic chronicles, to understand how authors used events involving women and stereotypes to write their histories. The book explores how authors blended history and fiction, speculated on women's motivations, and occasionally granted them a literary voice to connect with their audience, impart moral advice, and justify the crusade ideal. By comparing a wide range of historical narratives, Natasha Hodgson sheds new light on the complex and multifaceted roles of women in the history of crusading.
