Description

A casual note left on a car's windshield sets off a chain of events that brings author Kent Nerburn back to the Dakota reservation, where he reconnects with the elder who had previously chronicled his experiences in "Neither Wolf nor Dog". The elder now requires Nerburn's assistance in burying his old Labrador, Fatback, and in uncovering the truth about his sister's disappearance from a reservation boarding school many years ago. As Nerburn embarks on this journey with the elder and his friend Grover, accompanied by an unusual dog named Charles Bronson, they delve into the hidden corners of the elder's past. Their travels take them through dusty cemeteries, abandoned boarding schools, and into the heart of the Dakota hills, where the ghost of the elder's sister, Rose Bear, haunts their every step. Through this story, the elder shares his insights on the Indians' notion of time, the education of children, and the spiritual presence of the land, shedding light on the dark truths and secrets of life in the Indian boarding schools.
