Description

White Birch, Red Hawthorn: A Memoir is a deeply personal exploration of the land and its people. Nora Murphy's search for connection to her Irish ancestors' homestead in Minnesota uncovers a complex history of displacement and cultural heritage. The memoir weaves together twelve essays, each dedicated to a significant tree in Minnesota, with stories of the Native tribes who once called the land home - the Dakota, Ojibwe, and Ho-Chunk. Murphy also delves into her own family's history, tracing the journey of her great-great-grandmother from Ireland to America. Through this narrative, Murphy reveals the lingering wounds of the past and explores the possibility of healing through connection to suffering.
