Description

The White Birch: A Russian Reflection by Tom Jeffreys explores the complex relationship between Russia's diverse landscapes and its national identity. Through a series of journeys, encounters, histories, and artworks, art critic Tom Jeffreys grapples with the role played by the humble birch tree in shaping Russia's self-image. From Catherine the Great's garden follies to the Chernobyl exclusion zone, Jeffreys examines how Russia's vastly different landscapes have informed its people's thoughts on nature, land, and belonging. Along the way, he visits Moscow's art-activists Pussy Riot and contemplates the ways in which Russia's dramatically shifting self-image has impacted its relationship with the natural world. This thought-provoking book is a nuanced exploration of the intersections between culture, history, and environment, inviting readers to consider the intricate web of connections that bind Russia's people to their land.
