Walcheren 1944: Storming Hitler's Island Fortress In the final months of World War II, the Allies turned their attention to the Rhine crossings in the Netherlands. However, the capture of Antwerp, the largest port in Western Europe, remained crucial for maritime access and supply chain logistics. The island of Walcheren, situated in the estuary of the river Scheldt, posed a significant obstacle to Allied shipping. With its heavily fortified coastline, comprising 30 coastal and field batteries with guns ranging from 75mm to 220mm in caliber, Walcheren was one of the most heavily defended positions on the Western Front. The Allies launched a double-pronged attack on November 1, 1944, as part of Operation Pegasus. The successful capture of Flushing and other key strongpoints marked a significant turning point in the campaign, ultimately leading to the liberation of Antwerp.
