In March 1944, Japan launched a major offensive into India from Burma, codenamed "U Go", with the aim of capturing Imphal. This strategic location controlled access between India and Burma, making it a crucial prize for the Japanese. The British Fourteenth Army, led by its 4 Corps based in Imphal, faced off against the Japanese forces. The battle that ensued was one of the greatest of World War II, with over 200,000 men clashing in the hills and valleys of Manipur. The fighting lasted for four months, resulting in significant losses on both sides. Estimates suggest that around 30,000 Japanese soldiers died or were injured during the Imphal-Kohima campaign in 1944.
