Description

The development of vertical take-off fighter aircraft dates back to World War 2. In Germany, engineers conceptualised the Focke Wulf Triebflügel as a defence against Allied bombing raids, and it was intended for use in critical war factories and key areas without nearby airfields. After the war, research inspired various VTOL projects across the world. The US Navy contracted aircraft companies Lockheed and Convair to build prototype carrier-based VTOL fighters, while the French company SNECMA experimented with annular wing designs based on German research. Other countries, including the UK and the Soviet Union, also pursued their own VTOL designs. The Germans ultimately developed an advanced supersonic VTOL interceptor and a low-level VTOL strike fighter, both of which flew successfully but failed to reach service due to technical and operational issues. The Hawker Siddeley Harrier would later become the best-known and only successful VTOL fighter aircraft.
