Equality cannot be based solely on a shared human nature, but rather it is a commitment we make to ourselves and others.

For centuries, declarations of equality have relied on the idea that all men are created equal, appealing to a shared human nature as the reason for considering ourselves equals. However, this approach has led to gradations of natural difference and ambiguity at the heart of "nature", enabling exclusions based on gender, race, or class.

Political philosopher Anne Phillips challenges traditional justifications of equality by reference to a shared human nature, arguing that these attempts ultimately lead to exclusion. Instead, she calls for a genuinely unconditional equality, where people enact their status as equals when they refuse to be considered inferior.
