Description
The dawn of the twenty-first century brought significant economic growth to most sub-Saharan African countries, with annual growth averaging over 5% for fifteen years. However, this growth was not accompanied by structural transformation, as poverty, food insecurity, unemployment and inequality persisted. To achieve structural transformation, a state committed to development is required, and this can only be delivered through democratic means. The book explores the extent to which countries in Southern Africa exhibit characteristics of a 'developmental state' and what steps they need to take to become one. The authors examine South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Angola and Malawi, providing insights into the regional political economy and charting a path for its future development.
