Tokens and Traders of Kent in the Seventeenth, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries by David Villanueva The Provincial Token-Coinage was a system of coins that traditionally contained the value of the metal they were made from, minus a nominal amount for the monarch and mint master. However, by the 16th century, the penny and its fractions had become too small to manufacture and use, leading to the widespread use of token coins. These tokens were issued in three distinct periods, from 1648 to 1672, 1787 to 1801, and 1811 to 1815. Tokens issued by tradesmen contain valuable personal information, such as the name, location, trade, and even the spouse's forename initial in many cases. This makes them of great interest to genealogists, family historians, and local historians. Metal detectorists also search for these tokens, as they can provide a means of identifying their finds. Until now, the only solution to identification has been to consult extensive catalogues, which can be expensive and difficult to access. Fortunately, many of these catalogues have been compiled and are now available online, making it easier for researchers and collectors to identify and study these tokens.
