This Will Not Be Generative by Dixa Ramírez-D'Oleo explores the semiotics of ecological writings through Caribbean literary studies and black critical theory. The author examines how certain rhetorical strategies, such as the use of 'we' language and redemptive sympathy, can disguise extraction from black people and blackness. By closely reading texts by Donna Haraway, Monique Allewaert, and Lisa Wells, Ramírez-D'Oleo reveals how these approaches often rely on fantasies of white communion with indigenous groups. In contrast, the horror semiotics of films like Get Out (2017) and Midsommar (2019) unmask the antagonistic relationship between white survival and blackness as compost. This book offers a critical analysis of the ways in which language and theory can be used to conceal or reveal power dynamics, particularly in relation to issues of ecology, identity, and social justice.
