Description

The Virtual Life of Film by D. N. Rodowick explores the changing landscape of cinema and its role in the aesthetics and culture of moviemaking and viewing in the 21st century. As digital technologies continue to transform the film industry, Rodowick considers three critical responses to the disappearance of film and its persistence in narrative forms imagined by Hollywood since 1915. The author argues that most new media are fashioned upon a cinematic metaphor, perpetuating the cinematic as the mature audiovisual culture of the 20th century. At the same time, digital technologies are preparing the emergence of a new audiovisual culture whose broad outlines are only just beginning to be distinguished. This book provides insight into how digital technologies serve both to preserve and transform traditional forms of cinema. By examining these critical responses, Rodowick sheds light on the complex relationship between film, technology, and contemporary visual culture.
