In 1780, following a series of defeats for the Continental Army, the focus of the conflict shifted south, with British commander Cornwallis launching a campaign to expel American forces from the southern theater. Despite being outnumbered, Marion's band of patriots employed hit-and-run tactics, conducting numerous raids and skirmishes against British and Loyalist forces before dissolving to form and fight at a later time. As Cornwallis's forces advanced, Marion continued his operations in northeastern South Carolina, rescuing American prisoners, dispersing Loyalist forces, and defeating a British outpost. The British responded by assigning their aggressive cavalry commander, Banastre Tarleton, to capture or kill the rebel guerrilla commander, marking a turning point in the war.
