Description

The Song the Owl God Sang: Collected Ainu Legends by Chiri Yukie This collection of 13 Ainu chants presents a unique window into the oral literature of north-east Asia's vanishing culture. Chiri Yukie, a young Ainu storyteller, collected these beautiful yukar in 1922, making them the first Ainu literature to be written down by an Ainu. The chants tell of the relationship between humans and the world of spirits, with each yukar narrated by a spirit - from fox to shellfish - and focusing on the balance of nature and the respect due between animal spirits and people. Originally written in yukar form, these stories were devised by Chiri Yukie to represent Ainu language in the Roman alphabet. Her clear and beautiful translations brought Ainu culture to a wide audience in Japan, creating a movement to record and preserve Ainu belief in a living state. This book offers a rare glimpse into the Ainu oral tradition, which was in danger of dying out when Chiri Yukie began writing down these chants at just 19 years old.
