This book reevaluates one of the most important roots of Tanzania's Ujamaa Socialism, the Ruvuma Development Association. Founded by a basic-democratic movement of young politicized farmers, it brought together 18 cooperative villages in southwestern Tanzania and inspired President Nyerere to implement his vision of a modern socialist society.
Through empirical research and expert interviews, this study sheds new light on local perceptions of Ujamaa history and communal development, as well as the interrelations between local and national scale. It identifies recent farmers' groups as important heirs to Tanzania's socialist ideology, concluding that "the smell of Ujamaa is still there" in many aspects.
