Description
The Polish Navy 1918-45: A Study of Poland's Warships During World War II The Polish Navy was established in 1920, initially with six ex-German torpedo boats. Following a series of exercises with the Soviet Navy in 1924, Poland allocated funding for new warships, resulting in the construction of four destroyers, five submarines, and other vessels from British and Dutch shipyards. By the summer of 1939, the Polish Navy had grown to include a range of ships, including destroyers, submarines, and minesweepers. Despite its relatively small size, the Polish Navy played a significant role in the Allied war effort, operating alongside the Royal Navy and other forces in the Battle of the Atlantic, the Arctic Convoys, and the Normandy landings. One notable episode in the Polish Navy's history is the engagement between the Polish destroyer Piorun and the German battleship Bismarck, which resulted in the sinking of the latter. This book provides a detailed account of the Polish Navy's contribution to the Allied war effort, as well as the development and operation of its warships during the period from 1918 to 1945.
