Description

Rowan Williams's first collections of poems, After Silent Centuries and Remembering Jerusalem, are joined by a selection of new ones in this latest collection. The result is a poetry that brings abstract ideas to vivid life through sensual imagery.

The subject matter ranges widely, from the natural world and works of art to reflections on modern Welsh life and meditations on death. This latter theme emerges from Williams's personal experience of grief, as well as his studies of thinkers such as Tolstoy, Nietzsche, Rilke, Simone Weil, and Thomas Merton.

Translations are also included, with three poems from Rilke and several from the Welsh, where the translator has successfully conveyed the original's imagery and energy in English.
