Description

The Green-Eyed Lama is a novel set in Mongolia in 1938, during a time of great turmoil. The communist government, under orders from Moscow, launches a nationwide purge, resulting in the murder of nearly a tenth of the country's population. Against this backdrop, a young nomadic herds-woman named Sendmaa falls in love with Baasan, a talented and handsome Buddhist lama. Their love is complicated by the schemes of Sendmaa's neighbor and the actions of Baasan's brother, Bold. As the country teeters on the brink of war, Baasan is arrested and sentenced to death as a class enemy. However, an unlikely ally intervenes, reaching all the way to Franklin Roosevelt, and Baasan must use his ingenuity to survive the gulag and reunite with Sendmaa. Based on a true story, this novel explores the struggles of the Buddhist faith in Mongolia during this period. The Green-Eyed Lama is the first Mongolian novel to be published in the West, and its publication in French under the title Le Moine Aux Yeux Verts in 2017 marked an important milestone in its journey.
