The Falaise Gap Battles Normandy 1944 by Simon Forty and Leo Marriott is a detailed account of one of the most pivotal battles in World War II. In August 1944, Allied forces broke out of the bocage and pushed deep into German-occupied France, ultimately encircling and trapping large numbers of German troops. The battle was marked by fierce fighting as the Allies squeezed the western and northern edges of a German salient, while the Canadian First Army and Polish 1st Armored Division pushed south. The Germans fought hard to break out and rejoin their comrades, but were ultimately unable to escape the encirclement. Estimates suggest that between 80,000 and 100,000 German troops were trapped, with around 10,000 killed and 50,000 taken prisoner.
