The Death Chair: Electric Chair Executions in Tennessee, 1916-1960 The introduction of the electric chair in 1916 marked a significant change in the way executions were carried out in Tennessee. Prior to this, the gallows had been used for all those found guilty of crimes that warranted the death penalty. The electric chair, which delivers a lethal dose of electricity, was a more modern and efficient method of execution. Over the course of 44 years, 125 men were put to death in the chair, with 85 being black and 40 white. This book provides a detailed account of 43 of these men, including 21 white and 22 black individuals. The cases covered in the book are based on genuine facts and include the details of the crime and the execution. The cases are from the East Tennessee division of the state and include some of the most notorious murders ever committed in the region.
