Description

Sunshine and Storm in Rhodesia is a narrative of events that took place during the First Matabele War, fought between 1893 and 1894 in modern-day Zimbabwe. The conflict pitted the British South Africa Company against the Ndebele Kingdom.

The war was sparked by Lobengula's decision to approve a raid on a Mashona chief in the district of Fort Victoria, which led to a clash with the company. Despite having a significant advantage in terms of numbers, with an estimated 80,000 spearmen and 20,000 riflemen, the Ndebele Kingdom's forces were ultimately unable to use their modern arms effectively due to poor training.

The British South Africa Company, on the other hand, had a relatively small force of around 750 troops, supplemented by colonial volunteers and Tswana allies. The conflict highlights the challenges faced by European powers in colonising territories with traditional warrior cultures.
