Description

The Aorai handled easily in the light breeze, her captain running her well as she came to rest just outside the surf's suck. On the bottom of the huge and glassy lagoon lay much pearl shell, visible from the schooner's deck across the slender ring of the atoll. The lagoon had no entrance for even a trading schooner, but with a favoring breeze, cutters could win in through its tortuous and shallow channel. Divers were seen at work on the bottom of the lagoon, their small boats launched from the schooners that lay off and on outside. The atoll of Hikueru, a circle of pounded coral sand a hundred yards wide and twenty miles in circumference, was visible low on the water. The schooner's crew watched as the divers worked, their activities a testament to the lagoon's unique features. This collection of short stories offers a glimpse into the lives of those who ventured into such an isolated and fascinating environment.
