Shakespeare, Court Dramatist by Richard Dutton explores the significant role that royal courts played in shaping Shakespeare's creative work. The author argues that many of Shakespeare's plays were adapted for court presentation, where length and rhetorical virtuosity were valued. This study examines the court's patronage of theatre during Shakespeare's lifetime, including the Masters of the Revels who supervised performances and censored plays for public presentation. Dutton also reviews the emergence of the Lord Chamberlain's Men and the King's Men, to whom Shakespeare was attached as their 'ordinary poet'. The book focuses on six of Shakespeare's plays that exist in both shorter and longer versions, arguing that they are not cut-down originals but rather poorly reported versions revised for court performance. By understanding the court's influence on Shakespeare's work, Dutton sheds new light on some of the playwright's most famous plays, including Henry VI Part II and III, Romeo and Juliet, and The Merry Wives of Windsor.
