Description

Bert Stiles' memoir, Serenade to the Big Bird, recounts his experiences as an Army Air Force pilot in the European theater of World War Two. Stiles enlisted in the Air Force shortly after Pearl Harbor and served in various squadrons, including the 401st Bomb Squadron and the 505th Fighter Squadron. He flew 35 missions in B-17 bombers before transferring to a fighter squadron, where he flew the P-51 Mustang.

Tragically, Stiles was killed in action on November 26, 1944, at the age of 23, while on an escort mission to Hanover, Germany. His book, first published in England in 1947 and in the United States in 1952, has remained popular due to its poignant portrayal of the tragedy of war and the life of a young pilot.

This new edition of Serenade to the Big Bird includes photographs and a biography of the author, providing a unique insight into Stiles' life and experiences during World War Two.
