The Halifax Mk.II, BB378, was the final aircraft to be flown by Lieutenant Peter Bartter's crew on a perilous mission over Occupied Europe in December 1943. Their last operation, intended to deliver a key agent to Denmark, ended in tragedy when the aircraft was shot down, but the exemplary piloting skills of Captain Bartter ensured the safe landing of the aircraft in a frozen field. The crew's fate was sealed when they were captured by the enemy, with the officers managing to evade capture and reach Sweden, while the NCOs were held in the notorious Stalag IV-B. One of the NCOs would later escape from the camp just before its liberation by the Russians. This book tells the story of the RAF crew's clandestine missions, their capture, and their escape, shedding light on a lesser-known chapter of World War II history.
