Science Without Numbers: A Defense of Nominalism by Hartry H. Field. In 1980, Hartry Field's groundbreaking work Science Without Numbers caused a significant stir in philosophy, presenting a bold nominalist approach to the ontology of mathematics and science. Field argues that we can explain the utility of mathematics without assuming its truth. Field proposes that good mathematics has a unique feature ("conservativeness") which allows it to be applied to "nominalistic" claims in a way that generates new consequences more easily, without creating any additional ones.
