Description
The Cleveland Krishna: A Masterpiece from Cambodia's Sacred Mountain This book presents seven essays that shed new light on the history, material, and context of the Cleveland Museum of Art's iconic sculpture, Krishna Lifting Mount Govardhan. The authors explore the sculpture's journey from its creation in a cave sanctuary to its arrival in Cleveland, including a surprising detour through Belgium. The Cleveland Krishna is one of eight monumental sculptures of Hindu deities from the sacred mountain of Phnom Da, and this book delves into its significance within the broader context of the ancient metropolis of Angkor Borei. The authors reveal the long-lasting influence and prestige of the site, even six hundred years after the creation of the sculpture. This is the fifth volume in the Cleveland Masterworks Series, offering a unique perspective on the history and conservation of this remarkable work of art.
