Opened as a private landing ground after the First World War, the airfield was later developed into a major military airfield, playing a significant role in the Second World War and beyond. In 1930, it became home to the Maidstone School of Flying, and by 1932, it was renamed Maidstone Airport. The airfield's RAF role came to the fore in June 1940, with the arrival of the first aircraft, marking the beginning of its designation as the UK's first night fighter base. Over the years, West Malling was home to many notable pilots, including those who flew Mosquitoes, Spitfires, and Mustangs during the war. The airfield's strategic importance continued into the Cold War, with units such as Nos. 25 and 85 squadrons operating from the airfield. After closure as an operational air station in 1969, West Malling was redeveloped and eventually reopened as a civilian airfield, hosting a gliding school and several major air displays.
