Description
The Histories by Polybius provides a comprehensive account of the rise and expansion of Rome from 264 to 146 BCE. This seminal work is notable for its accuracy, thoughtfulness, and impartiality, offering valuable insights into Roman customs, institutions, geography, and the causes of events. Polybius' history covers the period during which Rome destroyed Carthage and eventually dominated the Greek world. The book's main theme is how and why the Romans spread their power, making it a vital achievement for understanding ancient Mediterranean history. This edition features W. R. Paton's revised translation, corrected Büttner-Wobst Greek text, explanatory notes, and a new introduction, all reflecting the latest scholarship.
