Description

The Passional Christi und Antichristi is a landmark work of visual propaganda produced by the Reformation, first published in Wittenberg in 1521. The book features thirteen sets of woodcuts, contrasting the life of Christ with that of the Antichrist, interpreted as the pope. These images are accompanied by bible quotations, extracts from canon law, and authorial comments, providing a unique insight into the theological debates of the time. The Passional was initially written in Latin, but the German edition was more widely disseminated. This volume presents the first critical edition and translation into English of the Latin Antithesis, based on the copy held in Oxford's Bodleian Library. It also includes a transcription, translation, and facsimile of the third edition of the Passional, printed by Matthäus Maler in Erfurt. This edition combines the latest research in both German and English, offering new reflections on the compilation and transmission of this important pamphlet.
