Description
Oscars Shadow: Wilde's homosexuality was a contested discourse in twentieth-century Ireland, reflecting broader cultural and national debates. This book explores how Irish media and literary sources configured perceptions of Wilde's sexuality during his trials and afterwards. The formation of the idea of homosexuality in Ireland from the early twentieth century is examined through an analysis of Wilde's presence as a sexual other. The strategies used to police his unnameable sin within Irish media and literary accounts are also considered. By examining contemporary newspaper reports from the Wilde trials, this study sheds light on the complex and contentious discussions surrounding homosexuality in Ireland during this period.
