Description
Oscar's Ghost: The Battle Over Oscar Wilde's Legacy by Laura Lee is a gripping account of the bitter feud between two men who were once close friends, but became embroiled in a struggle for control over the legacy of one of literature's most iconic figures. The story centers around Robert Ross, the literary executor of Oscar Wilde, and Lord Alfred Douglas, Wilde's former lover. Their dispute over Wilde's prison manuscript, De Profundis, led to a series of dramatic events, including stalking, blackmail, witness tampering, and even prison time. The feud had far-reaching consequences, shaping how we remember Oscar Wilde today. This book sheds new light on the mysterious figure of Maurice Schwabe, who played a pivotal role in the events that led to Wilde's imprisonment. With previously unpublished information, Lee reveals the complexities of this fascinating period in literary history.
