Description

Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths by Shigeru Mizuki is a deeply personal and landmark anti-war work that portrays a flailing infantry unit on its last legs near the end of World War II.

Inspired by the author's own mandatory tour of duty as an active combatant in the Imperial Japanese Army, this book depicts a desperate and morally complex situation where soldiers are ordered into battle with no escape from death. Mizuki's unique blend of fanciful characters and photo-realistic backgrounds brings to life the harsh realities of war.

Translated by Jocelyne Allen, Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths is a powerful exploration of human instinct in the face of absurdity and outdated command structures. With its gallows humor and poignant portrayal of desperation, this book is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the complexities of war and its impact on those who fight it.
