Description
Paul Ricoeur's On Translation explores the complex role of translation in shaping our understanding of the world. By examining the challenges and ethics of translating one language into another, Ricoeur reveals how translation can both spread knowledge and alter its meaning. Through examples such as the Renaissance translation of early Greek philosophy and the poetry of Paul Celan, Ricoeur demonstrates that translation is not just a technical process, but also an act of cultural exchange. He argues that in a world marked by ethnic and religious conflict, the art and ethics of translation are invaluable for navigating our differences. In this concise yet thought-provoking book, Ricoeur shows how translation is essential to moving through life in a multilingual world.
