Description

The secularist foundations of modern Turkey are being rediscovered by its citizens. In "Nostalgia for the Modern State", Esra Özyürek explores how ordinary Turks are expressing an attachment to the principles of Kemalism, the official ideology of the Turkish Republic founded in 1923. Through her ethnographic research in Istanbul and Ankara during the late 1990s, Özyürek examines how people demonstrated their affinity for Kemalism in various aspects of daily life. She looks at how domestic spaces were organized, walls were decorated, life stories were told, and political developments were interpreted. The book also considers the recent interest in the private lives of the founding generation of the Republic and the proliferation of Atatürk's image. This study provides insight into the ways that Turkish citizens are reconnecting with their country's modernist and nationalist past, and what this means for the country's future.
