In the stifling summer of 1348, a group of ambitious nobles and their serving men take advantage of the chaos caused by the plague to buy up large swathes of property and land. Their travels bring them to a tiny town called Nobber, where they encounter a cast of eccentric characters, including an egotistical bureaucrat, his volatile wife, a naked blacksmith, and a beautiful Gaelic hostage. As the group converges on the town, a deadly stand-off emerges, pitting the inhabitants against the marauding Gaels who are reclaiming lands that once belonged to them. The situation is volatile, with no one escaping unscathed. The result is a dark and bloody tale, well leavened with bone-dry humour, and with a dramatic climax that has the flavour of a Jacobean tragedy. With its hallucinatory and sly world-building, this first novel is a skilful storyteller with a rich command of language and rare comedic flair.
