Description
A seriously wounded soldier is found on the quay in Trieste in September 1943. He is taken to a German hospital ship, where a doctor, originally from Finland, provides him with medical assistance. The soldier has no documents or identifying features, and when he regains consciousness, he has lost his memory and cannot recall his language. The doctor dedicates himself to teaching the soldier Finnish, helping him to reconstruct his identity. As the soldier's memories return, he begins to search for his past and his identity. This poignant and thought-provoking novel explores themes of identity, memory, and belonging. Translated into English, New Finnish Grammar won several literary prizes in Italy and was shortlisted for several awards in the US.
