Description
NATO's Secret Armies: Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe In the aftermath of World War II, a network of clandestine anti-communist armies was set up in Western Europe, with the CIA and British secret service at its core. These secret soldiers were trained in remote locations and in unorthodox warfare centres, and were equipped with high-tech communication equipment and explosives. The network, codenamed 'Gladio', was linked to right-wing terrorist groups in some countries, engaging in political manipulation, harassment of left-wing parties, massacres, and coups. The Italian secret army was exposed in 1990, revealing a "best kept, and most damaging, political-military secret since World War II". Similar "stay-behind" armies have since been discovered in several other countries, including France, Spain, and Germany, and were internationally coordinated by the Pentagon and NATO. This book provides a detailed examination of Operation Gladio and its implications for Western Europe, shedding light on a previously unknown chapter in the history of modern warfare.
