Entering service in September 1945, these carriers were the ultimate design of the US Navy's wartime era, and would remain the largest and most capable American carriers as the Cold War began. These nuclear-capable carriers operated in the early Cold War frontlines of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and were capable of accepting significant modernizations over the next decades. Two of the ships saw combat in the Vietnam War, while the last ship, Midway, launched the first carrier airstrikes of the Gulf War in 1990-91. This book by Mark Stille explores the design and capabilities of the Midway class, which was the US Navy's attempt to build a larger and more survivable version of the wartime Essex-class. The Midway class featured an armored flight deck, a massive secondary and antiaircraft battery, and the ability to carry Regulus surface-to-surface missiles.
